Watch 12 Minutes of ‘Alien: Romulus’ Behind the Scenes Footage Loaded with Practical Effects!

A brand new video from the YouTube channel FilMonger takes you behind the scenes of Alien: Romulus this week, and it’s packed with twelve minutes of on-set footage and insights.

This behind the scenes featurette focuses heavily on the upcoming film’s practical effects-driven approach, which extends both to the movie’s detailed sets and its horrifying monsters.

Director Fede Alvarez (Evil Dead, Don’t Breathe) took an all-practical approach to the film wherever he could, shooting Alien: Romulus much the same way Ridley Scott filmed Alien back in 1978. Of course, there are a ton of visual effects enhancements at play here that Scott didn’t have at his disposal back then, but you might be surprised by how practical Romulus truly is.

Star Cailee Spaeny notes in the footage, “These sets really help with the acting, because you’re really just reacting to what’s in front of you. And they’re absolutely incredible and massive and so immersive. So every single set I’ve been on is impressive. It’s such a gift to be filming on sets like this and also to be filming chronologically. It does a lot of the work for you.”

Co-star Isabela Merced adds, “It really feels like we’ve traveled through time. And I’m getting to experience for the first time being on a movie set where they use pretty much all practical effects, but we get all the perks of a modern day filming experience.”

As for the monsters of Alien: Romulus, this brand new behind the scenes footage is loaded with practical Xenomorphs, Face Huggers and Chest Bursters, which all look incredible.

In Alien: Romulus, “While scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station, a group of young space colonizers come face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe.”

Cailee Spaeny (The Craft: LegacyPacific Rim Uprisingleads the cast alongside Isabela Merced, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Spike Fearn and Aileen Wu.

Alien: Romulus takes place between the events of Alien and Aliens.
