If you need an added incentive to read one of the summer’s most anticipated novels, Whalefall, here’s another: Deadline reports that an adaptation for best-selling author Daniel Kraus‘ novel is in the works.
The outlet reports that Imagine Entertainment has struck a pre-emptive film rights deal for Whalefall, which is scheduled to publish on August 8 by MTV Books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster.
The novel’s plot follows “a scuba diver in search of his deceased father’s remains who gets swallowed by an 80-foot, 60-ton sperm whale and has only one hour to escape before his oxygen runs out. It’s a tale about a young man who has given up on life — only to find a reason to live in the most dangerous and unlikely of places.”
The book is described as The Martian meets 127 Hours. Though, if you ask me, getting swallowed by a whale with limited oxygen sounds a bit more intense.
“We are thrilled to be entrusted with the adaptation of Whalefall. Daniel Kraus has crafted an extraordinary primordial adventure that is equal parts moving character study and edge-of-your-seat thriller,” said Lunder and Mandelbaum in a statement to Deadline. “At Imagine, we are passionate about bringing stories to the screen that convey the full range of the human experience, and Whalefall is a perfect addition.”
Kraus previously teamed up with Guillermo del Toro for a novelization of The Shape of Water, and continued George A. Romero‘s work with novel The Living Dead.
With the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes underway, what does this mean for Whalefall‘s adaptation? This means that no development or writing will be done on this adaptation until the strikes are resolved and new guild contracts are completed. While that means not to expect this adaptation very soon, that gives you plenty of time to catch up on Kraus’ novel.
Stay tuned for additional details on this planned production as they arrive.
